Chapter Twenty-Seven

“Hello,” the Shaman chuckled. “Is it me that you were looking for?”

I groaned. “Did he really just quote Lionel Richie to us?”

“Sounds like it,” Johnathan agreed. “Feeling mighty confident for a man stuck in a cell.”

Nearby, Eli shifted but didn’t say anything. I looked at him out of the corner of my eye as I felt the first whisperings of power in the room. The mage’s lips were moving, but he wasn’t speaking aloud.

I hoped he was starting to put up those wards that Johnathan had urged him to.

The Shaman, for his part, just continued with that low laugh.

“Where’s Vince?” I snapped. “What have you done with him?”

The laughter stopped. By then, the Shaman’s arm had finished fixing itself. He wiggled himself around slightly until he could see us. Then he bounced his way backward, so he could rest against the far wall while staring up at us.

“Vince,” he said, a cruel twist to his face, though most of it was hidden behind the bite gag the vampires had left on him, a sort of hard-rubber face shield that hid the lower jaw. “Vince is … elsewhere.”

“No shit,” I said, shuddering at the memories of my latest nightmare. “We know that. Where did you take him? You will tell us.”

The Shaman laughed. “Why would I do that? Vince is right where I want him to be.”

“You’ll tell us because you’re in our custody,” Johnathan growled.

“And? What are you going to do, torture me?” the Shaman taunted. “I don’t think so. You aren’t your father. You don’t have the balls to do it.”

I wanted to jump in and defend Johnathan, to tell the Shaman that Johnathan was a far better man than his father. That he wasn’t weak because he refused to use torture as a method to get the information I needed.

But I needn’t have bothered.

“You can’t manipulate me,” Johnathan said calmly. “My father would have tortured you, yes. But I’ve made it a bit of a habit to be better than he was. So, no, I won’t torture you. I’ll just leave you here. Without food and water. And nothing else. In time, that should be torture enough for someone like you. No followers to control, nobody to discuss your plans with. Nobody to appreciate your genius.” He snorted. “We’ll see how long you last.”

“My child,” the Shaman chuckled. “You have no idea how long I can last. You could not comprehend it.”

I frowned. That was weird language to use. What the hell did he mean by that? There was something to note about it. I just didn’t know what.

“We’ll see,” Johnathan said. “In time, you’ll tell us where Vince is.”

“Vince is … learning what the punishment is for failure,” the Shaman cackled, laughing to himself.

I went out on a limb. “And how long will Vince have to spend in Hell to learn that lesson?”

The Shaman’s eyes snapped to me.

It wasn’t much of a reaction, but it was enough. I was right. I knew where he was.

“See, we don’t need him,” I said triumphantly.
